I just finished updating my “small private college database” and found some interesting facts and statistics:

There are 735 private colleges in the U.S. with fewer than 3,500 students.

500 of the 735 admit a wide array of students (from C+ to A+)

12 of the 735 are highly competitive (admit fewer than 10% of applicants)

28 are HBCUs

37 are single sex for undergrads (33 female, 4 male)

The average out of pocket cost (for tuition, housing, food, and fees), without loans, is $26,147 ($31,250 for families that make over $110K/year)

The average enrollment is 1,437 students.

122 of the 735 have at least one ABET-accredited engineering program (110 of these are liberal arts colleges).

241 of the 735 offer at least one full-tuition scholarship (usually by interview).

Average sticker price (before merit or financial aid): $39,228 for tuition and $13,534 for housing and food ($53,243 total).

Average merit award is $17,126 (43% of tuition).
