This blog contains direct quotes from websites as of 2023. Programs and policies do change, at colleges, from time to time, so please check with the colleges directly to receive any updates. These are not, necessarily, the biggest, best, or most popular programs at the college, but they are the ones that just “caught my eye” as unique, special, interesting, or just plain awesome. Enjoy!
From the Mount Mercy University website, 2023: “Mount Mercy University’s environmental justice minor features coursework based on scientific inquiry and a global view of history and cultural relations, making it a vital, emerging program for this modern age.
“Mount Mercy helps passionate individuals like you learn to effectively convey ideas, organize movements and change the world. Our environmental justice program focuses on meeting human need where it exists. The minor combines care for the planet with attention to the most vulnerable populations affected by environmental problems: minorities, immigrants, the poor, and women and children around the world — each of which are components of the Sisters of Mercy critical concerns.
“The environmental justice curriculum combines scientific knowledge about the natural environment with an understanding of environmental policy and its impact on vulnerable populations.
“Integrating these disciplinary perspectives will prepare students to think critically about global environmental issues, to assess the effects human activity has on the natural environment, and to address issues of social injustice that arise when vulnerable populations are disproportionately impacted by environmental degradation.
“As entirely new categories of Green jobs are being created, knowledge of environmental justice will become necessary in fields such as business, health care, social work, education, law, tourism, outdoor conservation, and policy making.
“The environmental justice minor can be easily paired with any major to create an area of emphasis for your bachelor’s degree.
“Environmental justice students make a difference!
“No matter what direction you take in your career, the skills and work ethic developed through this course of study will serve you well. Our students have found success pairing an environmental justice minor with majors in social work, business, political science, philosophy, biology, chemistry, communication or outdoor conservation, just to name a few.
“Graduates from our environmental justice program can look forward to working in a growing, in-demand field and positions such as:
Environmental Project Manager
Land Trust Manager
Public Administrator
Environmental Policy Analyst
Green Entrepreneur
Environmental Educator
Environmental Lawyer”
