Documentary Storymaking at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA

This blog contains direct quotes from websites as of today’s date. Programs and policies do change, at colleges, from time to time, so please check with the colleges directly to receive any updates. These are not, necessarily, the biggest, best, or most popular programs at the college, but they are the ones that just “caught my eye” as unique, special, interesting, or just plain awesome. They are randomly listed in the blog section of this website. Enjoy!

From the Muhlenberg College website, 2023: “Documentary Storymaking is a multi-campus, multidisciplinary program that provides students an opportunity to integrate documentary making into their undergraduate studies. The study of documentary histories, theories, and practices is a way for students with diverse academic interests to develop digital literacies that complement the research and writing skills they are developing in their majors. It is designed to provide a foundation in the theory, ethics, and practice of documentary storymaking. Courses in the minor provide students hands-on experience in documentary storymaking methods, tools and practices that will develop their capacity to communicate to broad audiences. While it develops students’ individual capacities for creative and artistic expression, it is also deeply community-based and therefore connects students’ learning to the issues, concerns, and stories of broader community life within the Lehigh Valley.

“The Documentary Storymaking minor emphasizes hands-on experience in the methods, tools, practices and partnerships that foster students’ understanding and ability to create meaningful stories with and for diverse communities.

“While developing students’ personal capacities for creative and ethical expression, the minor in Documentary Storymaking is also deeply community-based and connects to the issues, concerns, and stories of broader importance in partnership with a variety of organizations and communities within the Lehigh Valley.

“Established in Spring 2016 through a collaboration among Lafayette College, Lehigh University, and Muhlenberg College, the Documentary Storymaking minor is open to students on each campus pursuing any major field of study.”
